The highly awaited video game Grand Theft Auto VI has been postponed a third time. On Thursday 6th November, the developing company, Rockstar Games, expressed on their Instagram that “these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve”.

As the first trailer (back in December 4th 2023) disclosed, the game was originally set to release sometime this year. Many people believed that it would see the light of day at some point in the autumn season. Every delay that Rockstar Games have shocked the fanbase with since has awakened much controversy and discussion.
Maro, a student at London Metropolitan University, said, “At this point, it feels like they’re delaying it for no reason. It has been 10 years (since the last GTA game). They did say they are working on perfecting the game. It’s better for us to get a good game. The only reason I know of it’s that they’re working on the game.”
The question of if the fans of the beloved game could remain loyal to Rockstar Games was put forth. Sara Said, 19, was forthright in her views: “I still think they’ll be loyal to the game, definitely. I think they’ll be waiting a long time for GTA 6 to come out and people will be irritated about it but I feel like people will still buy it either way because they’ve been waiting for a very long time now.”
Disgruntled employees
Previous employees that have been fired from the company made accusations against Rockstar Games that they’re responsible for union busting. The Guardian wrote that the company, ‘has been accused of carrying out a “blatant and ruthless act of union busting” after allegedly firing more than 30 workers who claim they were attempting to unionise.’ Fans speculate that this may be the cause of the postponement.
On the other hand, it is argued that, “According to Rockstar, the employees were let go because they were sharing confidential information about the game in a public setting. Game developers (especially Rockstar) are notoriously secretive about projects in active development, with employees often signing non-disclosure agreements as a condition for their employment.” tech reporter, Alex Perry of Mashable communicated.
Rockstar’s creation
Grand Theft Auto VI has much to live up to, winning Most Anticipated Game at the 2024 Game Awards ceremony. It has been over a decade since the release of GTA 5. From what the trailers have showcased so far, the fanbase have a thrill ride in store.
The game is based on a depiction of Miami, Florida recreated as the fictional city, Vice City. The story seems to be told from the two main characters, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, whose relationship seem to resemble a Bonnie and Clyde romance trope retelling.
What now?
The trip to Vice City will have the fanbase waiting for another year. With all the controversy surrounding this delay, it leaves the video game in murky waters for some. Only time can tell. Maybe a third trailer will come around sooner than we expect?
To hear of another set date for its release is not favourable, despite the fact that this company has had a bad habit of this with their past work like the predecessor, GTA 5 and another, Red Dead Redemption 2.
Perhaps third time’s a charm?
